Aikido Weapons Classes

Aikido weapons classes focus on the use of traditional wooden weapons to deepen understanding of martial principles and movement. Students typically practice with three main tools: the bokken(wooden sword), the jo (wooden staff), and the tanto (wooden knife). The bokken is used to simulate sword techniques, teaching proper posture, cutting angles, and timing. The jo emphasizes fluidity and distance control, while the tanto introduces close-range defense and disarming skills. These classes combine solo drills, partner exercises, and kata (formal patterns) to develop precision, coordination, and the ability to blend with an opponent’s energy. Training with weapons not only improves technical skill but also enhances focus, discipline, and the connection between empty-hand techniques and traditional weapon forms.
